INVOLVEMENT

"Election Year Rules for Nonprofit Advocacy"
Maryland Nonprofits

As funding cuts to many services and programs loom large during local, state, and national elections, 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations can and should continue their lobbying and public advocacy work. Nonprofit employees retain their basic First Amendment rights, after all. However, it is important to avoid activities that make your organization appear partisan, especially as IRS enforcement and congressional oversight are intensifying. Join us for a thorough review of the rules you must be aware of if you plan to advocate and lobby.

Topics will include the IRS "preferred" formats for candidate-related activities; when and how you can safely engage in voter registration and get-out-the-vote efforts; candidates lobbying; when "permissible" advocacy becomes "impermissible;" and common mistakes.
